Minnesota Used Vehicle Warranty Guide

Minnesota law requires licensed dealers to provide a minimum warranty on most used vehicles, depending on the mileage at the time of sale.
This warranty is called the Minnesota Statutory Used Car Warranty.
The warranty applies to vehicles purchased primarily for personal, family, or household use from a licensed dealer.
Warranty Coverage Based on Mileage
| Mileage at Time of Sale | Minimum Warranty |
| Under 36,000 miles | 60 days or 2,500 miles |
| 36,000 – 75,000 miles | 30 days or 1,000 miles |
| 75,000 – 200,000 miles | 15 days or 500 miles |
| Over 200,000 miles | No statutory warranty required |
The warranty expires when either the time limit OR mileage limit is reached, whichever occurs first.
What Is Covered
For most vehicles between 36,000 and 200,000 miles, the warranty generally covers major mechanical components such as:
Engine
- internal lubricated parts
- engine block and cylinder head
Transmission
- internal parts
- torque converter
Drive axle / drivetrain
- axle shafts
- internal components
Braking system
- master cylinder
- hydraulic lines
- brake calipers
Steering
- steering gear and internal parts
- power steering pump
Also includes:
- water pump
- mechanical fuel pump
- starter
- alternator
Parts not listed in the law are not covered.
What Is Not Covered
The statutory warranty does not cover normal wear items, including:
- brake pads
- tires
- light bulbs
- wiper blades
- cosmetic damage
- interior wear
- routine maintenance
Damage caused by:
- accidents
- misuse
- lack of maintenance after purchase
is also not covered.
When the Minnesota Used Car Warranty Law Does NOT Apply
Certain vehicles are excluded from the law and may be sold AS-IS.
These include:
- Vehicles with 200,000 miles or more
Example:
2011 Honda Accord with 215,000 miles → may be sold AS-IS
- Vehicles sold for less than $3,000
(with limited exceptions)
Example:
2009 Ford Focus sold for $2,500 → may be sold AS-IS
- Vehicles 8 years old or older
(with some exceptions for vehicles between 75k–200k miles)
Example:
2014 sedan sold in 2026 → may qualify for exclusion depending on mileage.
- Salvage vehicles
Example:
Vehicle with salvage title → usually sold AS-IS
- Vehicles purchased primarily for business or agricultural use
Example:
Contractor purchasing a truck for work use
- Vehicles with gross vehicle weight over 9,000 pounds
Example:
Large commercial truck
- Diesel vehicles
Example:
Diesel pickup truck
Important Buyer’s Guide Rule
Federal law requires a Buyer’s Guide to be displayed on all used vehicles.
If a vehicle qualifies for the Minnesota warranty:
✔ the “Dealer Warranty” box must be checked
If the vehicle is excluded from the law:
✔ the “AS-IS – No Dealer Warranty” box may be checked
A dealer cannot remove a required warranty simply by marking AS-IS.
